Dependent Origination

Chinese Chan master teaching dependent origination to a young student, illustrated in a 12-panel comic showing the chain from ignorance, formations, consciousness, and name-and-form through the six sense bases, contact, feeling, craving, clinging, becoming, birth, and aging-and-death, ending with wisdom breaking the cycle of suffering.

Not-Self

A 12-panel contemplative comic featuring a Chan Master and student illustrating the Buddhist teaching of Not-Self (Anatta). Panels explain the Five Aggregates (form, feeling, perception, mental formations, consciousness), impermanence, the reflection 'not mine, not me, not my self,' the suffering caused by ego-clinging, meditative observation of arising and passing, freedom from fear and greed, naturally arising compassion, daily-life mindfulness, conditionality with no independent controller, and the final peace beyond the illusion of 'I,' concluding with the insight: 'When there is no self to protect, there is nothing to fear and nothing to lose.

Emptiness

Chan Master Teaches Emptiness (Śūnyatā) - Comic Seeing Through the Illusion of Separate Existence: A Practical Guide to Inner Freedom in Daily Life Speech bubble (Master): "Emptiness means that all things are empty of inherent, independent existence. They don't exist by their own power." (Right side features the Chinese character 空 above the word ŚŪNYATĀ) Panel 1: What is Emptiness? Image: A student asking the master a question. Speech bubble (Student): "Master, what does the Buddha mean by 'emptiness' (śūnyatā)?" Caption: Emptiness is not nothingness; it is the lack of a permanent, independent essence. Panel 2: Dependent Origination Image: A ceramic tea set on a table. Speech bubble: "Things, like this tea set, are made of parts (clay, handle, spout) and depend on conditions (fire, potter). They have no 'tea set-ness' on their own." Caption: Everything is composed of parts and depends on other things to exist. We are interconnected. Panel 3: Impermanence & Emptiness Image: The student looking out at a mountainous landscape. Speech bubble: "Change shows us emptiness. A cloud is empty of being a cloud because it becomes rain, then a river, and vapor again." Caption: If things were truly independent, they could not change. Change proves emptiness. Panel 4: Emptiness of Concepts Image: The student holding an apple. Speech bubble: "Is this apple inherently 'an apple'? If we call it 'food', or 'seed', its identity changes. Our label is empty of independent reality." Caption: Names and categories are relative to our conceptual view, not absolute truths. Panel 5: The Illusion of Separateness Image: The student standing in a busy crowd with ego-driven thoughts. Speech bubbles (Crowd): "I must succeed!" "That's mine!" "I am better!" "I am matters!" Caption: The idea of separate "things" is the problem, not "emptiness" itself. Viewing oneself as separate creates competition and suffering. Panel 6: Form is Emptiness Image: A diagram of a pink lotus flower mapping the five aggregates. Diagram Text: Form (body) → Feeling (reaction) → Perception (concept) → Conditioning (conditioning) → Consciousness → (back to Form). Caption: The very forms we experience are composed of interdependent elements. Emptiness is not outside of form. Panel 7: The Door of Signlessness Image: The student and an elder looking at a rainbow. Speech bubble: "Because things are empty, we don't cling to 'signs' or labels. A rainbow has form, but no essence." Caption: We appreciate appearances without being bound by them. Panel 8: Compassion Rises Image: The student respectfully offering a bowl of food to an elderly woman. Speech bubble: "When separate identity fades, the barriers between self and other collapse. Compassion arises naturally from connection." Caption: Seeing interdependence (emptiness) naturally opens the heart to all beings. Panel 9: The Door of Wishlessness Image: The student sitting peacefully, drinking tea. Speech bubble: "Without separate identities to protect, life becomes light. We act, not to acquire, but because it is the next step." Caption: A mind that does not crave specific outcomes is at ease. Panel 10: No Inherent Nature, Only Conditions Image: The student observing a lotus pond in a bamboo forest. Speech bubble: "The lotus has no inherent 'lotus-ness'. It arises from the mud, water, sun, and seed. All phenomena are like this." Caption: Understanding causes and conditions brings profound patience. Panel 11: Peace Beyond "Things" Image: The student meditating on a mountain vista. Speech bubble: "When we see emptiness, the illusion of separate things fades. There is just clarity, connection, and ease." Caption: This is the peace of knowing our interconnected nature. Panel 12: The Path to Inner Freedom Image: The master advising the student on a balcony overlooking a valley. Speech bubble (Master): "See emptiness. Let go. Live as the conditions arise. This is the path." Caption: Emptiness (Śūnyatā) is the key that unlocks liberation for all. Footer Text surrounded by a lotus flower and bamboo branches: "When there is no separate self to protect, all things are seen clearly as one's own nature. This is the freedom of Śūnyatā."

Two Truths

ow 1: WHAT ARE THE TWO TRUTHS? The student tells the master inside a temple: "The Buddha taught that reality can be understood in two complementary ways: Conventional Truth, Ultimate Truth." Caption: They are two perspectives, like seeing a cart vs. its parts. CONVENTIONAL TRUTH (SAMVṚTI-SATYA): A man pulls a cart full of vegetables through a bustling village. Speech bubble: "At the conventional level, things and people exist..." Caption: Valid, useful, and necessary for communication, ethics, karma, and compassion. ULTIMATE TRUTH (PARAMĀRTHA-SATYA): A single figure meditates in a vast, misty mountain landscape. Speech bubble: "At the ultimate level... all phenomena are empty..." Caption: Nothing has a fixed essence or independent self; this is emptiness (sunyata). NOT TWO DIFFERENT REALITIES: The master and student sit, and the student holds up a large gold coin. Speech bubble: The truths are like two sides of a coin or the front and back of a painting. Caption: One coin, two sides. Together, they reveal the whole. Row 2: 5. AN EXAMPLE: THE CART: A diagram of a wooden cart with parts labeled: wheel, axle, frame, seat, shaft. Speech bubble: Conventionally we call this a 'cart'. Caption: Analyzed, it is only parts... there is no 'cart' apart from the parts. 6. WHY IT MATTERS: The student sits looking distressed in a shadowy, indistinct village street. Ghostly figures are behind him. Speech bubble: Clinging to conventional truth leads to suffering (eternalism); rejecting it leads to dry nihilism. Caption: Understanding frees us from extremes of eternalism and nihilism. 7. IN DAILY LIFE: The student helps pour tea for elders and assists a child in a village. Speech bubble: On conventional level, be kind, keep promises, care for family. Caption: Compassion, responsibility, and ethics operate here. Never use 'emptiness' to avoid goodness. 8. IN MEDITATION: The student meditates deeply in a dark forest. Speech bubble: Look deeply at body, feelings, mind... See how they arise and pass... Caption: This is direct insight... bringing wisdom and freedom. Row 3: 9. WISDOM AND COMPASSION TOGETHER: Student and master face each other. Speech bubble: Seeing emptiness gives wisdom; living with open heart gives compassion. Caption: Wisdom without compassion is cold. Compassion without wisdom is blind. 10. SCRIPTURAL SUPPORT: An open, ancient scroll with text (partially Chinese) sits on a table lit by a candle. Quotes provided: MN 141 and SN 22.95 regarding emptiness. Speech bubble: "Conventionally truth exists; ultimately there is no birth." 11. INTEGRATING THE TWO TRUTHS: A cyclic diagram with arrows. Labels are: Conventional Truth (live & act) -> arrows connecting both -> Ultimate Truth (see things truly). In the center, a lotus flower reads: "Wisdom & Compassion." Caption: Hold both in balance. This is the Middle Way. 12. THE FRUIT: The student and master sit peacefully together looking at a sunset over mountains. Speech bubble: Mind is free, heart boundless... Caption: This is the peace that surpasses all extremes—the freedom of the awakened. Below the grid, a large text block summarizes: "See the world conventionally. See it as empty ultimately. Act compassionately. Live freely. This is the path of wisdom." The footer includes illustrative elements of a lotus flower on the left, bamboo branches on the right, and a red Chinese-style seal.
